Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve Trek

STANDARD
Duration 5 days
Difficulty Moderate
Max Altitude 1,873 m
Season June – Sep
Group Size 2–8
Starts Bishkek

Overview

Sary-Chelek is a UNESCO biosphere reserve in western Kyrgyzstan — one of the most ecologically rich areas in Central Asia, and one of the least visited by international travellers. The reserve protects the world's largest natural walnut forest, a complex of alpine lakes, and an extraordinary range of wildlife including deer, lynx, and over 150 bird species.

The five-day trek enters from the Arslanbob walnut forest, moves through the protected zone past a series of small hidden lakes, and culminates at Sary-Chelek Lake itself — a 7.5km stretch of crystal-clear blue water completely enclosed by forested hills. The effect is unlike anywhere else in Kyrgyzstan.

The route is accessible to moderately fit trekkers. Altitudes remain relatively low (maximum 1,873m at the lake) making this an excellent option for those who want a multi-day trek without the altitude demands of the Tian Shan.

Itinerary

Long drive southwest to Jalal-Abad region. The world's largest natural walnut forest begins. Overnight guesthouse.

Enter the UNESCO biosphere reserve. Trek through ancient walnut and fruit trees. First camp at reserve edge.

Trek deeper into protected territory. Several small alpine lakes along the route. Wildlife: deer, rare bird species. Wild camp.

Reach the main lake — 7.5km long, crystal-clear blue water surrounded by forest. Wildcamp or guesthouse on the shore.

Morning on the lake. Drive back to Bishkek (8h). Tour ends.
