Duration 3 days

Max Altitude 3,400 m
Season May – Oct
Group Size 2–10
Starts Kyzart village

Overview

The Song-Kul horse riding tour is Kyrgyzstan's most popular equestrian experience — three days on horseback from Kyzart village, over the Zhalgyz Karagai Pass at 3,400m, down to the extraordinary high-plateau lake of Son-Kul at 3,016m.

The riding is accessible to beginners. Kyrgyz horses are hardy, calm, and accustomed to mountain terrain. Your guide provides riding instruction on day one before the pass crossing. The reward for the effort is Son-Kul itself: wild horses on the lakeshore, nomad yurt camps, an enormous sky, and the complete absence of anything that feels like tourism.

You stay with a nomad family in a traditional yurt both nights — eating their food, hearing their stories, and experiencing a way of life that has been continuous in these mountains for centuries.

Itinerary

Meet horses and guide in Kyzart village. 5–6h ride ascending to the pass. Views back over Chon-Kemin valley. Descend slightly to camp.

Ride to the lake. Full day along the lakeshore — nomad families, wild horses, extraordinary high-plateau scenery. Yurt overnight with nomad family.

Morning ride. Descend from the plateau via a different route. Transfer to Kochkor or Bishkek.
