Overview

The Issyk-Kul Loop is the most popular road trip in Kyrgyzstan — a five-day circuit from Bishkek that circumnavigates Central Asia's second-largest lake, hitting every major highlight on both shores. It is the ideal first Kyrgyzstan experience: accessible, visually extraordinary, and comfortable. The route runs east along the north shore via the 10th-century Burana Tower to Karakol, then returns west along the dramatic south shore past the red sandstone formations of Jeti-Oguz, the Barskoon waterfall, and the blood-red spires of Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon. Private 4WD vehicle and English-speaking guide throughout. No physical fitness requirement beyond comfort in a vehicle. This tour combines sightseeing with short walks at each stop — suitable for all ages.

Itinerary

Depart Bishkek. Stop at Burana Tower (10th-century minaret) and petroglyphs. Reach Issyk-Kul north shore. Overnight Cholpon-Ata.

Drive east along north shore. See beautiful scenery at Karakol valley. Overnight in a guesthouse.

South shore begins. Red canyon formations of Jeti-Oguz ("Seven Bulls"). Barskoon waterfall — the most photographed waterfall in Kyrgyzstan. Overnight in a comfortable yurt camp.

In the morning drive to Skazka ("Fairy Tale") Canyon — blood-red formations in early light. Scenic drive along the dramatic south shore. Enjoy hot springs after. Stay at the same place as previous.

Drive to Ak-Sai canyons, complete the loop. Return to Bishkek via Boom Gorge. Tour ends.
