Starts Bokonbaevo

Overview

The Barskoon and Jyluu Suu trek is one of the routes developed in partnership with CBT Bokonbaevo — a community-based tourism programme operating on the south shore of Issyk-Kul. The route crosses the Tong-Ashuu pass at 4,000m, offering panoramic views of both Issyk-Kul and the surrounding Tien Shan, then descends to the geothermal Jyluu Suu hot springs.

Five days through territory that sees very few international visitors: the Uch Emchek valley with its glacier-fed waterfalls, the serene Kokui-Kol Lake, and the remote Kerege Tash valley for the final camp. Pack horses carry equipment throughout, so you hike with a day pack only.

This trek is suitable for fit, experienced hikers comfortable with high altitude. The Tong-Ashuu pass crossing on day two is the most demanding section.

Itinerary

Drive from Bokonbaevo to Tuura-Suu village. Begin trek to Kok-Bulak summer pasture. First night in shepherd's tent.

The crux. Climb to Tong-Ashuu pass at 4,000m for panoramic views of Issyk-Kul lake and the surrounding Tien Shan. Descend to Jyluu Suu hot springs. Swim, fish, camp by the springs.

Cross the watery Uch Emchek valley — small waterfalls, glacier streams, herds of yaks. Camp in the valley.

Follow the Jilyy-Suu river to Kokui-Kol Lake. Rest at the lake. Continue to Kerege Tash valley for the final camp.

Final morning hike out. Transfer back to Bokonbaevo. Tour ends.
